Accident Summary:

While flying as wingman in a light fire team escorting a dust-off, the co-pilot observed enemy tracers during a turn. Coming out of the turn the crew chief warned the pilot of trees. Observing the trees, the pilot flared and pulled pitch while continuing into and through the trees. Weather was considered a factor because of light haze, ground fog and darkness.

Accident Summary:

THE UH-1C WAS ON THE FIRST FLIGHT FOR THAT DAY ORIGINATING FROM QUAN LOI. THE FLIGHT WAS ROUTINE AND AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT THE CREW WAS TEST FIRING THE WEAPONS SYSTEM. THEY MADE THEIR FIRST RUN ON THE TEST FIRE ZONE AND EXPERIENCED SOME TROUBLE WITH THE WEAPONS SYSTEM. THEY STARTED A SECOND RUN FROM APPROXIMATELY 300 FEET AGL AND TERMINATED AT APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET AGL WITH A RIGHT BREAK. DURING THE RIGHT BREAK THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER NOTED A LOSS OF ENGINE AND ROTOR RPM. HE TRIED TO REGAIN THE LOSS BY LOWERING THE COLLECTIVE WITH NEGATIVE RESULTS. THEY CONTINUED TO LOSE RPM AND ALTITUDE. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER ENTERED AUTOROTATION AND FLARED TO AVOID A TREE LINE. PICKING OUT THE BEST AREA IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY HE ZEROED OUT THE AIRSPEED AND PUT THE AIRCRAFT INTO AN AREA OF 20 TO 30 FOOT HIGH BAMBOO. THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FORCED LANDING THE ENGINE REMAINED RUNNING BUT SUPPLYING LITTLE OR NO POWER.\\
