Category: Web site CommentsHello to Everyone.. My name is Carrie (Cook) Smurr, daughter of Donald W. Cook who died 03-28-70 found your web site and home someone can contact me about my father... thanks for the help...you have a very interesting site Category: Web site CommentsMy name is Carrie Cook Smurr, my father was CWO Doanld W Cook, he was killed in a helicopter crash in Bien Hoa 03-28-70. Finding your website has been very interesting, my brother and I would love to here from anyone that knew our father. My brother was not a year old when Dad was killed, both of our birthdays are in Sept, I would have been turning 5 that year. Since we don't know a lot about him, maybe someone on the other end of this computer line can give us some stories to share with our children. Thanks for the opportunity and Good Bless You All Category: Web site CommentsMy dad was with the EMUs and he used to have a book that looked like an annual. I have looked all over for it and can't find it. His name is Victor W. Quinton can you help? Category: Web site CommentsHi there, I attended the EMU reunion in Nowra this past April and am working on putting together a video for my father. I would like to use some of the stills on this site but cannot seem to get some of them to work. Is there any way to ask the owners of the images to email jpegs to me directly? Thanks! Fran Dunaway Category: Web site CommentsI was a door gunner/crew chief in 1971-72. I was shot down on 30 Sep 71 and flew on the last mission in Jan 72. In 1978 I went to flight school and have flown the UH1-H ever since. This is a great website and I hope some of my old buddies will contact me. Stephen R. My name is Heather Cooper (Bilyeu) My father served with the 135th in 1970 and 71. His name was John L. Bilyeu. I was wondering if any of you knew him? I would like any info on his time there. Please list me under the "Flight Members" section. I was the crew chief for slick#888 in 69-70 at Bear Cat. Thanks. Phil Olive Category: Web site CommentsThis has been a truly remarkable experience for me to explore your web site....I am the sister of the late Lt Anthony (Tony) Casadio who was killed in action in Vietnam on August 21st 1968....Tony was a pilot (Gunship) a proud member of the Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam...Your site has given me a much clearer insight into his life in Vietnam, and as I look thru all of the photographs I see for the first time the faces of so many of the men that Tony wrote and spoke of in his letters to his family. I have donated all of his letters, photographs, and indeed his United States awards, eg Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal for gallantry, and his mentioned in dispatches a posthumous British Commonwealth award., plus his log book etc to the Australian Aviation Museum, which is at Nowra in New South Wales, in the Naval Air Station....These decorations meant so very much to my late parents and indeed myself....I believe that this time is a part of the history . the courage and bravery and skill of each and every one who served should be honoured and respected and never forgotten. Thank you again for your web site... Category: Web site CommentsPlease take a look at this site and let me know if you decide to set up a link to it from your site. www.1stavn.com thanks Category: Web site CommentsA very good site. It is a good feeling to look back and see so many names and happenings from the past all on this site and to realise how great this unit was. I for one am proud to have been a part of it. I will be visiting Blackhorse as well as Bearcat and wanted you all to know I will not only be honoring My father but you all as well. What an amazing country. I will update you all as to the progress of my trip. I proudly carry the 135th scarf and pins I was sent. Lots of love, Kelly Category: Web site CommentsI am thrilled to have found your web site. You've done an exceptional job. I found your site thru Andy Curran while searching for another pilot. The photos, maps and music take me as close as I can get since I was never there. It touched my heart...I can only imagine the impact on you men who actually lived it. Category: Company CommentsVery nice this site brought back lots of memories. I was with the 135 from May 69 to April 70. The first 2months I was in The Prop Shop Then was placed in the Maintenance Platoon. Which was my MOS, the last 4 months I was in the Gun Platoon. I must say that this web site is just great hope I can find a few friends that may remember me. All the photos etc that were take were destroyed so this really has been a trip in the past for me. Lots of great men lots of memories. Thanks Category: Web site CommentsDear sir, I think your site is fabulous, and a fitting tribute to some of our worthiest fellow veterans. I am a published Australian author (see <www.myvietnam.com.au> for details) and am currently researching a second publication, "Voyages to Vietnam". Whilst there is a smattering of information available locally on the Australian involvement with the 135th, I am finding suitable photographs difficult to come by. Is it possible to ask if any reader/contributor to the site has slides or black and white shots they would like to see published (in return for a free, leather bound copy of a 200 page photographic essay on the role of the Australian Navy in Vietnam)? I would be grateful if this request were able to be posted somehow. Category: Web site CommentsHi to all the EMU's and Taipans, I just stumbled on to this web site tonight, and was amazed to see the info that was available and even the pictures. Even though i was only with the company about 4 months, June 71-Sept 71, I had a great time with all my comrades and think of them often. I was surprised to find my picture there after I was wounded. I didn't remember any photos at the hospital. I will be attending the VHPA reunion in Orlando next week and I look forward to renewing old friendships, especially with Joe Blth!!!. Our friends at the Pima Air Museum in Tucson have kindly offered to mind it for us for twelve months during which time, we have to find a way of getting it from Arizona to Australia. We've had a request in with the RAAF - to uplift with a Hercules - for more than a year now but I'm not hopeful anything will come of this. Our best hope I would think is to find someone Stateside with USAF connections, who can arrange for it to come across in one of the USAF Galaxys that shuttle across to RAAF Richmond each fortnight. I bring this to your attention in the hope it might trigger a few ideas. Of course we'd also like to hear from anyone who might have a photograph o # 290 and, who might be able to help us organise the export paperwork. Hood in 1967, I was one of the original gun ship crew chiefs. Then we moved to Black Horse. I had no idea the company would have such a long and distinguished service record. Serving with the Aussies was quite an experience. It was a real hoot seeing a lot of the guys at the reunion in Dallas in 1998. My hot brass 'accidentally' branded many of the pilots and I have first hand knowledge why 'The Boss's Hoss' has a new left pilot door in one of Rick Coleman's photos! Category: Web site CommentsHi guys...great job on the website. There were a lot more of us behind those of you who flew....clerks, supply, cooks. I was a cook in Blackhorse and again for my second tour in Bearcat. It would be nice for those of us who supported you guys to get a little recognition. We really did turn out some great meals for you guys under adverse conditions. I'm not complaining...just wanted to share my feelings. Keep up the good work!! I remember Mr. Lawrence and I remember his crew chief telling me about this incident. Stephen Selby EMU Crew Chief 1971-72 Vietnam Veteran Gets Award 33 Years Late By ROBERT BURNS The Associated Press Updated: 8:43 p.m. ET March 25, 2005WASHINGTON - From one former Army helicopter pilot to another, Gen. Richard Cody presented the military's second-highest award for valor on Friday to Stephen E. Lawrence in recognition of his exceptional acts of heroism during a harrowing rescue mission in Vietnam. advertisement The award was approved 33 years ago but never presented to Lawrence because of bureaucratic slip-ups. "This is more than I ever expected," Lawrence, 56, said in accepting the Distinguished Service Cross during a ceremony in the Pentagon's Hall of Heroes. "It may be a little late, but this is fabulous." Cody, a career helicopter aviator and now the vice chief of the Army, quoted chilling words from one of the men whom Lawrence rescued from a downed aircraft on Oct. 5, 1971, while braving enemy fire. "This is the one experience that I have relived hundreds of times in my dreams," the unidentified survivor was quoted as saying. "There was no doubt in my mind that I was going to die that day. I truly believed that anyone attempting to rescue us would also be facing certain death." Lawrence was 28 days from finishing his tour of duty in Vietnam with the 135th Aviation Company when, as the pilot of a UH-1M "Huey" helicopter gunship, he chose to attempt a rescue of another American helicopter that had gone down in flames in an enemy stronghold near the Cambodian border. According to the official Army citation, Lawrence twice landed his gunship near the burning aircraft before he and his crew managed to get the downed crew aboard and fly away under heavy fire. "Chief Warrant Officer Lawrence's utter disregard for his personal safety, his devotion to duty and outstanding flying expertise enabled the crews of both aircraft to return to safety," the citation says. Within days he had departed Vietnam, returned to Fort Lewis, Wash., and been discharged from the Army. He now lives in Clearwater, Fla. "Steve, what you did over three decades ago mattered very much to the people whose lives you saved and to generations of their loved ones," Cody said. It also matters to today's aviators, he said, and it was the kind of heroism that sparked Cody's own interest in an Army career. "Television images of gunship pilots like you flying in Vietnam inspired a young West Point cadet to be a gunship pilot. It was pilots like you that motivated me to be a pilot," he said. Before Lawrence left Vietnam his commanding officer told him that he intended to nominate him for the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest honor for military valor. That was the last Lawrence heard of the matter until last summer, when he had dinner with fellow Vietnam vet Roger Almquist, who was surprised to hear Lawrence had been awarded nothing beyond the Distinguished Flying Cross, which was presented to him two days after the rescue mission. Almquist decided that should not be allowed to stand. He began researching the matter and soon discovered that the completed paperwork for the Distinguished Service Cross, dated May 1, 1972, was in Lawrence's files in Army records at the National Archives. For unexplained reasons the Army never notified Lawrence of the award's approval. He remained in the Army National Guard for another seven years and served for 15 years in the Coast Guard, retiring from the Coast Guard Reserve in 1994. Lawrence is one of 846 soldiers who received the Distinguished Service Cross for Vietnam service, according to Army records. As far as he can tell, he never was nominated for the Medal of Honor. Looking back, Lawrence feels fortunate to have survived that last battle of his military career. "We were some lucky guys that day," he said. ___ Category: Web site CommentsJUST TODAY FOUND OUT ABOUT REUNION, SORRY THAT I CANNOT ATTEND. MY BABY BROTHER WAS KILLED WITH THIS UNIT IN 1969 .
