Hi Steve, I was on a flight that left Di An for Tay Ninh and there joined up with 5 other slicks. After refueling the flight went to Phnom Penn where we picked up Admiral John S. McCain Jr. and his staff. The flight then went to the west coast of Cambodia to Sianookville. The mission was to determine if the US would give any more aid to Cambodia. The flight AC was Capt. Agness who became very ill after departure at Phnom Penn. The co-pilot Capt. Lewis was somewhat ill and the gunner Creighton Higa was on sick call for 3 days after returning to Di An. The crew chief, Will Tucker was the only one who didn't get sick on the mission. Capt. Agness was later sent to Japan to be hospitalized for this illness. The last time I saw Capt Agness he couldn't have weighed more than 110 lbs. Down from about a thin 165 lbs. My question is, WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO CAPT. AGNESS? Any information would be appreciated. Julius J. Zebehazy "Bud" WO1; I joined the unit in May 1967 at Gray AAF and was assigned to the third platoon. Cpt Hunt was the platoon leader at the time. Deployed 1 OCT 67 with the main body. Just visited the site for the first time. Thank you for putting this together, I half laughed half cried as I looked through the pics and listened to the sound bytes, I was a Spec 4, turbine engine mechanic in the 135th from January '69 till August '70 at Bearcat. Gentlemen: I was one of the lucky ones who, fresh from Mother Rucker, arrived at Fort Hood in April 1967 to establish the 135th AHC (then called an Aviation Company) and get it ready for deployment to Viet-Nam. The call sign then, in those pre-VN days, was Lone Star, not Emu. You could tell that they just grabbed a whole bunch of new WO1s out of the graduating class at Rucker, because most of the newbies had last names starting with R and S: Swinford, St. John, Sutphen, Rebstock, Robertson, Rohrer, etc etc. As a Captain, I was assigned the extra duty of company historian and immediately inherited the 135th's unit archives, from its EARLIER incarnation as a Caribou company in Viet-Nam. The Caribous went away in the now-famous trade-off with the USAF wherein we gave them most of our cargo-carrying fixed wings and they gave us virtually unlimited roles and R&D with helicopters.... and the rest is history. Was able to put together a credible archive of the Fort Hood era and passed it along to my as-yet-unnamed successor as unit historian when I left the 135th in Viet-Nam. We all flew to VN out of Bergstrom AFB in Austin on Oct 1st '67....there was some serious genuflecting during the bus ride down to Austin. Most of the guys went over on C-141s, but I and maybe 60 others drew a C-130: 36 hours in the air and 72 hours on the clock, Austin to Bien Hoa....ouch. We flew immediately to Vung Tau and were put up in a villa in a section of town that reminded one of an old Charles Boyer movie. Like many others, I underwent a couple of weeks of "in-country training", with the 128th AHC Tomahawks at Phu Loi, then was sent back to the 135th (still at Vung Tau....the name "Blackhorse" hadn't been uttered yet). It was only a day or so later that I was permanently "infused" to the 191st AHC Boomerangs at Bearcat, where I remained for 7 months. We worked with the 135th (now Emus) often enough and, during the occasional stop at Blackhorse, I wandered into the quarters there to see who was still around from the Fort Hood pre-deployment days. Many war stories about bar-hopping in Killeen ensued. End of story: On Sept 30, 1968 I had one day left in country and, being stationed at 1st Aviation Bde HQ at Long Binh, I hopped in my jeep and trucked on over to the Replacement Company there, just to "recon" my escape route for the next morning to ensure I didn't get lost. A raucous noise was coming out of the Officers' Club there. I wandered in and there they were....nearly all of the old 135th from Fort Hood. Each of them, in turn, had come to the end of their tour of duty and were now re-united for the trip back to CONUS....less those few who had been killed, medically evacuated or (in rare cases) voluntarily extended in VN. I seem to recall that we closed the bar that night and some guys' speech was a little slurred the next day on the flight back to the US. Now, in Paul Harvey fashion, you have The Rest of the Story.

I am a pensions Officer with the Australian RSL Sub Branch, and I am trying to get some medical information on a RAN member, Barry J. Thatcher, No. R62701, who served in Dong Tam in 8/1071 to 16/6/71, and received an injury to an eye, which is now deteriorating into blindness. At my age, not very good with computers. Does the site contain a consolidated roll of everyone -as far as we know - who served with the 135th, perhaps arranged on a year basis. As for myself I was at Dong Tam 70-71, I guess, in the last group of aussies that served with the 135th. I missed the Nowra Reunion, being at sea, if you can believe it, serving in HMAS TOBRUK.
