I haven’t found a better kept web site out there. I hope to see lots of new
photos and new members on the E-Mail list this year.

I am thankful for this web page, as I have found many old friends, and made

and its nice to know that so many members of the unit have found this site and

Absolutely a fine, fine web site. You’ve done yourselves proud boy’s. To any
member of the 135th, who served in any year, any platoon, or whom is associated
with someone from our ranks, know that to reconnect with your fellow unit
members is one of the finest moments you will ever have in life. The next time
you have a glass in your hand, raise it to toast, “here’s to the survivors, may
we do well to please our fallen comrades”.

It’s good after all these years to be back in touch with the people from the
135th! I arrived in Bear Cat July, ’69 and left in August , ’70. I took over the
operation of the company wrecker for the last couple of months I was there. The
wrecker was used for removing and installing engines, transmissions and main
rotor blades, etc. John Spears was operating the wrecker in the last couple
months before he left for home. He taught me the operation of the vehicle. I
stayed in the maintenance barracks in the company area and then I moved over to
the motor pool area behind the chapel. I still have my 135th Company yearbook
with pictures, etc. – This yearbook has everyone’s individual picture.

I worked for BHI (Bell Helicopter International) in Esfahan, Iran from 1976 –
1979, and right now I’m working as a mechanic for United Airlines in San
Francisco.

Feel free to email me if you’d like to talk about old times in Vietnam or
Iran. My email address is seacove[at]pacbell.net.

Pleased to see the “Taipans” finally being recognised. Unfortunately very
little is said about the “Taipans” of the first 135th AHC unit. Baz Todd, Terry
Brookes and myself, John Peart, were the original Australian gunners and crew
chiefs of the 135th AHC. Dave “Blue” Green came along quite some time after the
formation of the unit. Blue was also a very good friend of mine and I’m very
upset over his demise.

My father, Spec 4 Hilary Turner, was with the 135th 1969-1971(2).

I started a book on you guys in 1999, and had to put it aside while
completing Honours studies in 2000. I’m back to start interviewing again!! My
project is to combine personal stories with research, an idea put to me by Steve
Eather the writer of the 135th AHC book by Allen & Unwin and published in the
USA. I want to inform those of my generations of what service life and
experience is really about.

Jim Hill, if you catch this, please email me about this reunion that’s
happening in Nowra 2002??

Two of us “Blackcats” had the privilege to fly with the EMUs in late 1969. We
were visiting our buddy,(3 days R&R) who was stationed at Long Thanh. We always
wanted to see the “Delta” so we asked to fly with you for a day. After we were
checked out by your Operations guys, we flew as Guest Gunners. I can still hear
the crew laughing after I took 10 paces from the ship, at a LZ in the Delta, to
retrieve something and struggled back to my door after gaining about 50 lbs of
Delta Mud on my boots. I felt like a FNG! Great Website and I will always have
fond memories of the 135th.

The following is taken from the April 2001 edition of The Signal, the
official journal of the Returned and Services League SA Branch.

Advice has been received from the Military Awards Branch of the Department of
the Army (US) that they have agreed to award Air Medals to RAN Pilots or any
other RAN personnel, that are able to produce Flight Logs proving HFV hours
flown with the 135th AHC.

The article concludes by saying that further information is available from
the RSL State Branch Office.

I came back for my second tour and was assigned to the 214th BN at Bearcat. I
was there for a short time when we got orders to move to Dong Tam. We had a
Engineer Major who was to go down and build the barracks but unfortunately he
had hepatitis and was evacuated to the states. I was in construction before the
Army so I was volunteered to go to Dong Tam. After 3 or 4 days two Hooks landed
and discharged about forty of the saddest looking selectees that the units had
sent me.. This finally ended up with about 100 men and after about sixty days we
completed the housing for the two units that came down… This was just about my
hardest assignment in Nam. I left there in Feb 69 and assumed command of the
173rd Robinhoods As you can see I’m new to computers but I’m having a ball
trying to stir up old memories.. Your website is one of the best that I’ve seen

My Father, Judd Hendricks worked with the 135th in Bear Cat as a civilian
tech rep on the helos with Cliff Reed. Judd was in an auto accident on May 2nd,
2001 in Sarajevo and died from his injuries on the 3rd. His ashes were buried in
Arlington in June.

Dad spoke fondly of his time with the EMU’s, he considered you all to be his
family while in country. He was proud of the work he did, and proud of working
with men like you all who served so faithfully.

If any of you remember Judd, hoist a beer in his memory.

Thank you

In late 1967 or early 1968 I was a gunner on Harry Porters ship. Coming out
of a night infantry position we took a single hit that messed up our hydraulics.
We had to make an emergency landing at Can Tho. On the approach we flew over the
Mekong, was glad we didn’t go down there. Our pilots did a great job and got us
down in one piece. Harry fixed the leak and we went on our way. The pilots were
two Australians, Crawford and Dagleish. I have never seen them on this page or
the previous 135th page. If possible I would like to hear from them.

Sp4 Cavanaugh was listed as gunner . He was the crew chief and Pfc Labuda was
the gunner. I know because I was to fly in Cavanaugh place. I did the schedule
for the first platoon. At the time of takeoff, he came out and went in my place.
My gunner was Pfc Labuda. If anyone has a picture of Pfc Labuda, I would like a
cope of it. I have told this to very few people. I feel as though I should of
been on that flight.

Ernie I was a gunner on Earl Juhl’s ship on 2/8/68. We were a couple of ships
behind Capt. Fleer’s ship. When we got into that LZ I was hit in the leg. On the
way out of the LZ a heavy burst of tracers hit Capt Fleer’s ship and it went in.
There was nothing any of us could do. It was not your fault. There was nothing
you could have done. I am glad you made it through Vietnam. It is good to
remember our old friends, like Fleer, Moore, Cavanaugh and Labuda who are no
longer with us. You are a good man Ernie to remember old friends. God bless and

…and what a strange trip it’s been… anybody else remember the night
Charlie blew up the ammo dump at Di An late in 1970? After the nut roll at the
arms room where guys were trying to get M-16s with their meal cards, we all took
our lawn chairs up on the roof to watch the show about 2 clicks away… I
remember many fearful “oooooo’s” and drunken “ahhhh’s” that night as rockets
swooshed over our shoulders and concussions thumped us in our chairs. It was
quite a show, and it lasted for hours… played hell getting those M-16s back,
too.

The CO’s hootch was fragged twice while I was there. One lucky dud, and one
when nobody was home… I was *sheriff* for the one that went off. After that?
Things just got weirder…

This September I attended a reunion of the 191st AHC. Deployed with them from
Ft Bragg 5/67 and was infused to the 135th AHC about 10/67. The reunion was
great! If you can get to a reunion make sure you do. We were talking ,
complaining actually, about Army food. One of the wives said, ” didn’t you guys
ever get good food?” I had to tell them about Thanksgiving Dinner at Vung Tau in
1967. The whole Company sat down to a meal at the same time. The Cooks had set
the tables with Tablecloths, China, and first class Silverware. There was Turkey
with all the trimmings, Pumpkin pies and even Wine! It was the best meal I ever
had in the Army. Thanks to the guys who made it happen! I want to wish Happy
Holidays to all the members of the 135th AHC and their families.

Thanks to everyone who helped me when I was down and out living on the
streets. Thanks to who ever from the 135th sent the Christmas gifts. You have no
idea what it is like to be lost and lonely. I surly would have bet my life it
would not or could not have happed to me. But in the twinkle of an eye it did, I
am fine now and trying to get back to work. I have lost every thing. But gained
much more. Thanks to all my friends who was there when I needed them. God bless
you all. Steve Clark
