Been to this page before but find it better every time I come back. Wish I
knew how to do some of the things on the computer that you do but I’m still a

This is a great site. My brother-in-law, Noel Shipp, killed in action 31 May
1969, a great friend. I am particularly thinking of Noel at this time due to my
husband’s untimely death on 14 December 2001. Noel and Bob were great mates and
I hope they have now been reunited. Friendships are so important so keep up the
good work. Margaret

chance to fly with EMU out of Di-An/Phu-Loi; Can not remember any of EMU but for

again to a CW3 (or CW4) that let me on control of a “OH-58” from Di-An to
Phu-Loi on a rainy day (I Never been inside this bird before that moment…)
EMU, Let me wish you all the best that life can offer to you. I do not have [at]

Dad was with you guys 1968/69? He is in the photo on the scrap book page –
Dedication in Australia front row, second from the right – Good ol ‘happy
hawkins’. Can’t get him to use the Internet just yet, but he asked me to check
out the site, I learnt a lot and it was great to see some of the images and the
people associated with my dad’s history. I work as a strategic IT director for a
rich media company in Brisbane Aust, so I will try and get some of my Dads old
photos and upload them to you, if I can get some video images I will send you
encoded launch codes. Great to see your site and I will tell my dad about it,
who knows maybe a catalyst for him to log on himself. Cheers Ray Hawkins Jnr
P.S. if anyone wants to make contact with my dad I will be happy to pass on any
messages.

My old friends, do you remember the Tet Offensive of 1968? I remember how on
the fist day we we heading to Budop but had to land at Chu Chi because the VC
were attacking Budop. A few days later we flew reinforcements into the
devastated city of Ben Tre and flew out the 9th Infantry dead. Most of all I
remember the action of Feb. 8th and the loss of Captain Fleer, WO1 Moore, Spec 4
Cavanaugh, and Pfc. Labuda. Hard to believe that happened 34 years ago!

Finding this web site was like a dream from the past. I had all but given up
of ever finding any trail of my former unit. Resigned to remembering moments
that I sometimes wondered if it were just figments of my imagination. Thank you
for being here for me. I have nothing to offer. All photos, scarf, black beret,
unit patch and crest long ago lost. I was a gunner, assigned to Taipan 19 and
had a big yellow “Iron Butter Fly painted on the nose of our gloriously awkward
bird. I was very young and have no remembrance of names dates or places only
that they melted one into another. Thank you for giving me peace of mind, and a
place I can come back to remember a long and almost forgotten time. Wish I had
my scarf, patch, beret etc. back…

I am helping to organise the 2002 reunion. Things are getting hectic but we
are on track. So far we have over 100 EMUs attending. The most popular event is
the Emu Monument dedication and the EMU reunion dinner, both on Saturday, 27th
April. The Monument is almost finished, the construction that is. We still have
a few bills to pay, please feel free to contribute. Hope to see as many of you
as possible, share a beer and a few memories. If any one intends coming and has
not registered yet, PLEASE do so as soon as possible !!!! We need to know for
logistical reasons.- Catering, busses, seating, printing, arrangements for
wives/girlfriends, nominal lists, invitations, programes, etc etc. Contact me at
my email address for further information, or if you can not make it to the
reunion, or to send a message to the guys and have it pinned on our notice
board. Regards, Frank.

Flew in the Delta when you guys were at Dong Tam. Early in ’71, we had a RF
going up around Chi Lang, I think, and there was a Special Forces KIA on the
side of the mountain….VC had them from above and below, and I think one of
your guys got duped into going in to retrieve the body, I believe with a cargo
net weighted down with 55 gal barrels, and the VC shot up the cockpit while they
were at a hover…don’t know how many were lost, but heard one of the EMUs got a
DSC Posthumous…any info?

I am looking for anyone who remembered my Father Floyd “Skip” Fink? He was
from Arizona and was with the unit from 67-68. He survived the war but was
killed February 18th, 2000 in the line of duty in Tempe, AZ when a drug impaired
driver rear ended his patrol car! I could use any information from anyone who
knew him! My e-mail address is mjfink[at]theriver.com! Thanks!

Hi everyone who was at the 2002 reunion in Nowra. I’d like to thank everyone
for showing me a wonderful time while I was there. I’d also like to express my
appreciation to the committee for their wonderful job done with all the
organising of events and for all their prayers for good weather. The good lord
definitely heard you all. It was great to catch up with new and old friends who
knew Noel while in Nam. I am hoping to catch up with some of you when I next
visit Nowra. God with with you all.

Just got back from the reunion in Australia. It was great. The monument
dedicated to the 135th is quite a tribute to the EMU’s and Taipans. The
Australians went out of their way to show everyone a super time. Lots of old
friends and many new ones. VB still tastes great. A fantastic time was had by
all. My special thanks to the reunion committee for a job “Bloody Well Done”.

My R.A.N. Vietnam Flight commendation pin is on the way! Just want to take a
moment to thank Andy Curran for commissioning the pin and the rest of the
Aussies who supported his effort to commemorate our contributions in a troubled
time. We were among the best of the AHCs, and in no small part, it is because of
how well the Australians and Americans worked together. This pin will be a
treasured memento of my past and will be among those things I will be passing on
to my son. In doing so, it will help to preserve the memory of an important and
noteworthy unit in the military history of both our countries. Thank you Andy
and your fellow countrymen. Sincerely, Kelly Odell

My site was made to honor those who served our country, but in a much more
trying time than I did. Thank you all for serving, you deserve any and ALL
recognition you get. The 199 RAC was based out of Vinh Long, but flew from many
Forward Air Fields, the site was inspired by a friend of mine who flew in the
company, Dave Kling. I started by attempting to find those that he served with
and then, the site was born. Thanks again for answering the call, and a belated

This is great. My great friend Wayne Terry was in this unit and sent me to

Pendleton campaign, repairing radios…. Now, I’m in civil affairs and I’m a
“human intelligence gatherer” what used to be called an interrogator … intel.
I have a passion for war history. My dad was a bombardier in WWII and Korea,
Army Air Corps, then the Air Force and retired after 20 years and now lives
peacefully in Houston. My brother was in Marine Recon in 1965 and landed ashore
at Da Nang before it was a rear echelon base … My uncle was in Korea with the
Marines. So, this is very interesting. Keep up the good work !

Happy holidays to all! As we enter the holiday season with our loved ones and
we give thanks for every day WE have had with them please take a moment to
remember our brothers and sisters who GAVE ALL for us! Drop a note to active
military personnel now stationed around the globe! It is easy to do, just

This is the best yet I’ve ever seen for all us vets around the world. Looks
possible to locate those I’ve not talked to in over 32 yrs. I had some
Australian friends in the 135th I respected them very much. Looking forward to
hear from them. Are you out there some where Michael Aves? Does any one know?

Your site looks good at a first quick glance. I flew a lot of night missions
in late 1971 in your area, with all-night standby at your place after the
mission. What fond memories, trying to grab some shut-eye on top of a slick
slathered down with insect repellent.

It has been a long time since I really thought about those days. What great
comrades I had during those times. My bro Jeff Carr and I reunited for the first
since the war a couple of years ago. Great website

How about Michael Aves, of the Royal Australian Navy? Also Barry Thatcher,
who worked in the Engine shop next to me and Aves in the rotor shop? Or I would
appreciate a hello from any one who served in this unit in the time frame.
Thanks and GOD BLESS TO ALL WHO SERVED.

From the original EMU 24, the site is just great. Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year to everyone . Can’t help but get a little teary eyed this time of the
year thinking of those days long ago and our friends that didn’t make it home.
