Happy new year to all!!! Guys, as we get on with another year of our lives
(who would have thought back then that we would be above ground in the 21st
century), please remember our mates who are now in the same fix we were in back
then! They need our help now like we needed our country’s help back then. Many
are coming home in tough shape! If you can spare a few bucks, please visit our
web site, homesforourtroops.org and help us out. We are building NEW HOMES for
our severely injured, returning veterans of the war on terror. WE MUST support
these people who are giving much in our name. Hate the war, but support our
troops! God bless us all, our band of brothers!!!

I found your website by accident, as it was located at the bottom of an
e-mail entitled, “flyingisms” that a friend sent to me (the same friend that I
mention later in my comments). I have to say I have thoroughly enjoyed the last
hour and a half perusing your site. I was career (9&1/2 yrs on arrival) when I
arrived in country and I viewed the tour as one more day towards twenty. When I
came home I put VN behind me. When I retired in 1979 I put the Army behind me
and proceeded to get on with my life. In 1992 a very good friend that I had not
seen or heard from since 1969 bought me a membership in the VHPA and I attended
my first reunion in 1993. That was probably the most emotional three days of my
life (other than the death of my son in 1968 just prior to my leaving for VN) I
have attended many reunions (VHPA & 101st) since and now have an entirely
different view of my tour and my 20 yrs. Thank you for your website and your
service.

I’m Ed Schunemann CWO Jim Schunemann’s brother. Over the years my family and
I have come to know a lot of Jim’s friends from the 135th. My dad most of all.
I’m sad to say that my dad, SGTMAJ Gustave E. Schunemann (Ranger Retired) 80
passed away on Oct. 18, 2004. He would always talk to me about the great web
site you guys put together. It was one of the main reason he learned to use a
computer in his late 70’s. I just wanted to pass along the news of his passing
to those of you who have spoken with him. Thanks again.

Another hero fell last week in Iraq! Marine Sgt. Andrew K Farrar, age
thirty-one was killed in action on his birthday. Andrew is survived by his Mom
and Dad, Wife Milissa, Son Tyler, age 6 and Son Liam, age two. He was on his
second tour and was due to return home in a couple weeks. He was electrocuted
while searching a building during an assault. Please, if you can, say a prayer
for Andrew and his family! A memorial fund to assist his family has been
established in his home town of Weymouth Massachusetts. If you would care to
help his family during their hour of need, donations may be sent as follows:
Andrew K. Farrar, Jr. memorial fund, South Shore Bank, 1530 Main Street, South
Weymouth, Ma. 02190. I never met my hometown hero but I have been sending him
packages and letters since September and feel his loss deeply! I remember those
long past years when we came home and no one gave a damn about us. We CAN NOT
let these young heroes go forgotten as we were. Dave Curtin, Homes for Our

I was a door-gunner with the 135th AHC Gun Platoon. I was with the guns for
about six months, leaving country in November of 1969. My crew chiefs that I
remember flying with where Ron Pauly, John Dewitt and Eddie Pagel. One of my
good friends also a door-gunner Bob Gates was a lot of fun to serve with. All
these guys and more whom I can’t remember their names, where great guys and
taught me a lot about my responsibilities. Thank you guys for a great website

Just about the neatest web page that I’ve seen. I was at Bear Cat when the Bn
was to move to Dong Tam. We had an Engineer type Maj assigned who was to go to
Dong Tam and start the buildings to house the Bn units. He was evacuated to the
states with some rare malady and guess who was chosen to go south. I was flown
their with an initial crew of 25 and dumped off at the airstrip. I eventually
had a crew of over 100 and we completed all the buildings except for the hangers
and mess halls. I didn’t get to enjoy the lovely resort area because I received
orders to go to Lai Khe and take command of the 173rd Robinhoods. During my stay
at Dong Tam I think we got mortared every night. Usually with very little damage
but right after I left; a large rocket hit the operations building of one of the
companies and there were many casualties including the CO.. Probably too long
for your website but delete it. Bill Griffin

infantryman. My brother is listed on the memorial page as: SP4 Larry Gay Pool CE

Wonderful site. A tribute to a unit which was a highly successful and gallant
unit. Unfortunately most Australians do not even know about the involvement of
these guys and it is great to see you promote this. I was assistant secretary to
the Captain of NAS Nowra (the base of RANHFV) during this period and recall many
instances of very distinguished service by our fleet arm people, most
unreported. I remember SBLT Gibson who, I believe, landed on a mine and blew up.
I met him back at Nowra, severely injured with wounds to his arm and hand. I
believe he was discharged as medically unfit and I hope the Navy looked after
him, although I doubt it. Also, I would like to mention Sub-Lieutenant Keith
Powell, who, to my knowledge, flew, by far, the most missions in that
detachments deployment and received the least recognition. I believe he received
a Mentioned in dispatches. Of course the CO got the DFC, and it went down the
line from there. cheers John Macdonald

Great web site. See several familiar names, Madison, Cory, Allen, Bass,
Zebehazy, Harrison, Freeman, Durham, LCDR Ralph, and many others. I was assigned
to the 207th at Hood when I left my first tour. We became the 135th and deployed
from Bergstrom AFB. I was in the Gun Platoon with MAJ Madison and early in the
tour infused to the 222nd and later the 120th Razorbacks. The time in Vung Tau
was memorable as we and our Australian friends got to know each other and
trained together. A truly unique unit. My best to all at the reunion in 2005.

left country on January of 1972. you may remember me as the Crew Chief of the
maintenance ship…EMU6. Pilot: Cpt. Savacol Co. Pilot: Lt. David Buchubber Door
Gunner: Spc. 4 Kevin Karu We were the guys who retrieved our units downed
choppers or made repairs in the field. as well as other duties called on to do.
I had a twin brother who came up from Can Tho during is last few months of duty
serving with the 335th AHC. There is a photo of me on the 335th web site under
Jim Maraden.. maybe a glimpse to reminisce. I will send photos soon. If by
chance you following guys read this….hello to Leo Gaynor, Dave Marsh, Kevin,
Rick Corly, and so many others! I will get out those scrap books and follow up.
Also my congratulations to our fellow men in arms.. the Royal Australian Navy!!

Hi Guys. For those of you who are attending the Reunion and all you others,
my Heart is there! Went and dug out all those old photo albums & such. Tons of
memory! Also read my DD form 214 and have a correction to make. Could help out
in remembering me, as the photos have reminded me of you! I arrived in-country
at Bear Cat in April of 1970. I left country from Dian in late November of 1971.
Thru my request for a 1049 to stay in-country an additional 6 mos. I returned to
Dong Tam after leave and there shortly after I relinquished the Maint. Ship
duties and pursued an opening in the Maint. Dept. as a T. I. Inspector. Carrying
it to Dian. Funny, I am A Cal OSHA Inspector now for 3o plus years. hope this
message might bring back some memories.. LOTS OF LUCK!

What a wonderful memorial. Thank you so much to everyone who worked to put
this event in motion. I also want to thank everyone who welcomed me into the
135th family and helped to make me feel comfortable. It was a very difficult
first step for me and you guys made it easier for me. I know I met many people
who served with my father Bernardino Genchi. I wish I would have been able to
sit with everyone who knew him and hear stories, but I know that this was a time
for you to catch up with old comrades as well so I didn’t want to monopolize
everyone’s time. I would love to correspond with anyone who would like to. I
would also like to invite anyone who is visiting the New York/Long Island area
to stop and visit. I learned a lot this weekend and am so glad I was able to
attend. Thank you all for welcoming me into your family.

Just wanted to thank Fred and Caroline and their family and friends for a
most memorial event at this years reunion. My wife Angelia and I are so happy we
were able to join with everyone. The Convoy from Biloxi to Ft Rucker was
fantastic. With our Australian and US Flags waving we were escorted thru towns
by the local police where traffic coming towards us stopped, people on the
roadside took off their hats out of respect and there were even people crying as
we passed.

“Soldier Boy”, I know you look at this website often with much love & pride.
I do, too, as you probably realize & my deep appreciation goes to you & every
veteran. When you see this message, please get in touch with me again as you
promised. I’ve been waiting a very long time & will for however long it takes,
but there is no happiness in my life without you in it. I have so much to tell
you. I do know what is deep in your heart but not what’s in your head right now.
I believe that you are an honorable man so please remember the efforts you made
towards me & allow me the same. I pray with all my heart that you are well &
look forward to hearing from you.

My dad, Thomas McGinnis was from Ft. Hood (where I was born) and was in
Vietnam flying around with some of you guys in 67-68. I have been doing some
research to get him some patches, I am in Iraq as a civilian contractor and have
been for almost 2 years now and with all the Army guys around here I was trying
to find a patch I could get for him. I have gotten to go up in a blackhawk 3
times while being here, twice during the day and once at night to and from
Baghdad and around, what a ride it is everytime I get the chance to go
up…loving the whole doors open thing….oh yeah!!! I wasn’t even a year old
when he left for Vietnam and I am glad everyday that he made it back…This
website is awesome, I have found 3 pictures of my dad on here and I love
them….keep up the good work on the site!!!! Tina

Guys; As some of you mates know I am the solicitor for Homes for Our Troops.
We collect funds, donations of labor and materials and build new/remodel homes
for our brothers/sisters returning from the war on terror which have severe
injuries. If you can, please watch extreme makeover home addition on ABC on
September 25, 2005 8/7c. See what can be done for our mates when America cares!
If someone had done this for us can you imagine how differant things would be
for us? Also, please say a small prayer for our departed vets and the victims of
the recent storm. God bless our homeland and us all!

As I sit here in Iraq and show some of the next generation of Veterans the
pictures of all of us when we were young and full of it, it’s hard to believe it
has been over 30 years. I am on my fourth tour as a DOD Civilian supporting
troops who were not even born when we wore the uniform. On the up side, I get to
ride around the country in Blackhawks and remember the good old days when we
were allowed to drink beer. General Order #1 now prohibits that.

‘Soldier Boy’ in the Chevy…This website remains so special but still no
contact or message from you. The girl in a pretty new coat is having a birthday
& would like to see you on that day at the same time & place as last. She’ll be
there waiting for you & hopes you miss her as much as she misses you. If you
can’t be there, please call, write, email or have a trusted friend get in touch
as she needs to know how you are. She would have to say that there was always
something missing out of her life & that was you. And who knows, maybe the Lord
will give her back to the boy who lost her a long time ago. You are in her heart
just as she is in yours…always. S.W.A.K.

Got a real surprise at the FlightSafety training center in Wichita, KS. An
instructor there kept questioning me about my name and nickname. Suddenly, we
both realized that we flew together with the EMUs. I’m glad that he recognized
my name because I sure wouldn’t have recognized Joe Rhiley if I’d passed him on
the street.
